This transgene contains a cDNA encoding the viral 40-kDa Tax transactivator protein of human T-lymphotropic virus, type I (HTLV-1; also called human T-cell leukemia virus, type I) under control of the Tet operon (tetO), which comprises seven copies of the tetracycline responsive element (TRE) upstream of the cytomegalovirus minimal promoter. In a bitransgenic mouse also expressing tTA (tet-off) or rtTA (tet-on) from a tissue-specific promoter, Tax is conditionally expressed in the absence or presence, respectively, of tetracycline.
