The Neurog1 coding region in the BAC RP23 457E22 was replaced by recombineering methods with the coding sequence for cre recombinase. Pronuclear injection of the construct into (C57BL/6J x SJL/J)F1 fertilized eggs was used to generated transgenic mice. Founder mice were subsequently established. The transgenic mice were then bred to outbred ICR mice. When crossed with a reporter strain, cre activity mimics the endogenous gene expression patterns in specific populations of interneurons and some motor neurons in the neural tube between embryonic days 10-13. Also, Cre recombination occurs in Neurog1 lineages that include subpopulations of neurons in the olfactory bulb, hippocampus, cortex, thalamus, midbrain, cerebellum, and dorsal root and cranial ganglia.
