A bacterial lacZ gene was inserted into the gene such that the endogenous gene promoter drives expression of beta-galactosidase. While RT-PCR analysis detects a low level of gene transcript in cerebellum, heart, thymus, skin, gallbladder, pituitary gland, skeletal muscle, tongue and stomach, beta-galactosidase expression from this allele is detectable in most organs examined. Most striking expression was detected in the central nervous system, heart and kidney.
