Exon 1 was disrupted by homologous recombination of a targeting construct containing a neomycin selection cassette. The targeted exon encoded the first 40 amino acids, including the signal sequence. Northern blot analysis of homozygous mutant mice showed low levels of truncated transcript. Any protein translated from this message would lack a signal sequence and therefore would be expected to be non-functional. (J:82738)
