Exons 9, 10, and 11, encoding transmembrane domains 7 and 8 (amino acids 506 through 621), were replaced with a neomycin selection cassette. Northern blot analysis of total RNA extracted from salivary glands showed an absence of normal transcript in homozygous mutant mice, though low levels of a transcript containing the neo transgene were detected. This mutant transcript was not expected to encode a functional protein. (J:60671)
