Sequences encoding exon 1 are deleted in this mutation. The deletion extends at least 2 kb 5' to the translation start site. Expression of Fgf5 in hair follicles of wild-type mice is localized to the outer root sheath during the hair production phase of the follicle cycle. FGF5 may function as an inhibitor of hair elongation. (J:20551)
