组蛋白是负责真核生物染色体纤维核小体结构的基本核蛋白质。该结构由约146bp的DNA围绕一个核小体、一个由四个核心组蛋白(H2A、H2B、H3和H4)每对组成的八聚体组成。通过连接蛋白组蛋白H1与核小间DNA的相互作用,将染色质纤维进一步压缩,形成更高阶的染色质结构。该基因无内含子,并编码一个复制依赖的组蛋白,属于组蛋白H3家族。该基因的转录本缺乏polyA尾;相反,它们含有回文终止元件。该基因位于染色体6p22-p21.3上的大型组蛋白基因簇中。[RefSeq,2015年8月提供]
