这个基因编码的蛋白质属于吡啶核苷酸-二硫化物氧化还原酶家族,是硫氧还蛋白(Trx)系统的一员。在哺乳动物中发现了三种硫氧还蛋白还原酶(TrxR)同功酶。TrxR是含硒半胱氨酸的黄酶,可以还原硫氧还蛋白以及其他底物,并在氧化还原内稳态中起到关键作用。这个基因编码一个泛素表达的细胞质形式的TrxR,作为含有FAD和活性位点的硒半胱氨酸(Sec)的同二聚体发挥作用。Sec是由UGA密码子编码的,通常作为翻译终止信号。硒蛋白mRNA的3'UTR含有保守的茎环结构,即Sec插入序列(SECIS)元素,这是将UGA识别为Sec密码子而非终止信号所必需的。主要是在5'端的选择性剪接导致编码相同或不同同工型的转录变异体,包括主要表达在睾丸中的含有谷氧还蛋白的同工型。[RefSeq提供,2017年5月]
