这种抗菌基因是位于染色体9p臂上的几个CC细胞因子基因之一。细胞因子是一类参与免疫调节和炎症过程的分泌蛋白质家族。CC细胞因子是以两个相邻的半胱氨酸为特征的蛋白质。与其他趋化因子相似，这个基因编码的蛋白质抑制血细胞生成并刺激趋化作用。这个蛋白质在体外对胸腺细胞和激活的T细胞有趋化作用，但对B细胞、巨噬细胞或中性粒细胞没有趋化作用。这个基因编码的细胞因子也可能在调节淋巴细胞归巢到二级淋巴器官中发挥作用。它是趋化因子受体7的高亲和力功能性配体，该受体在T和B淋巴细胞上表达，并作为细胞因子家族的另一成员（小诱导性细胞因子A19）的已知受体。[RefSeq，2014年9月提供]
