这个基因编码的蛋白质属于吡啶核苷酸-二硫化物氧化还原酶家族,是硫氧还蛋白(Trx)系统的一员。在哺乳动物中发现有三种硫氧还蛋白还原酶(TrxR)同功酶。TrxR是含硒代半胱氨酸的黄酶,可以还原硫氧还蛋白以及其他底物,并在氧化还原内稳态中起到关键作用。这个基因编码第三种TrxR,与其他两种同功酶不同,它含有额外的N-末端谷氧还蛋白(Grx)结构域,并在睾丸中表达最高。Grx结构域使这个同功酶能够参与Trx和谷胱甘肽两个系统。它作为一个含有FAD和硒代半胱氨酸(Sec)的同源二聚体在活性部位发挥作用。Sec是由UGA密码子编码的,通常作为翻译终止信号。硒蛋白mRNA的3'UTR含有保守的茎环结构,即Sec插入序列(SECIS)元件,这是将UGA识别为Sec密码子而非终止信号所必需的。已发现这个基因的替代剪接转录变异体。实验证据提示使用非AUG(CUG)密码子作为翻译起始密码子(PMID:20018845)。[RefSeq,2017年8月提供]
