The transgene comprises the mouse motor neuron and pancreas homeobox 1 promoter driving the expression of a cytochrome c oxidase subunit VIII mitochondrial targeting sequence-EGFP fusion protein gene. After random genomic integration transgene mRNA is expressed at high levels in vascular endothelium in brain, spinal chord and heart, with lower expression in gastrocnemius muscle, kidney, spleen and lung, and largely absent in liver. Evaluation of EGFP protein levels showed the highest levels detected in the brain, spinal cord, spleen, lymph nodes, thymus and skin, with modest expression in muscle, heart, lung, and intestine, and largely absent in liver and kidney.
