A 2.3-kb fragment of rat alpha1 type I collagen promoter drives the expression of a truncated form of the herpes simplex virus thymidine kinase gene. Northern blot analysis confirmed transcript in long bones, calvaria and tail and immunostaining confirmed protein expression localized to cells lining the trabeculae and the endosteal surfaces, with lower levels in tendon. Osteoblast cell ablation is dependent on the administration of an antiviral prodrug such as ganciclovir. Two lines were generated (98-117 and 98-200), however, this record represents pooled data or data where the line number is not specified. (J:112520)
