Mdes4kb-lacZ transgenic construct bears a 4.6 kb EcoRI/SalI desmin promoter (from -4005 to +608) and a lacZ reporter gene with a nuclear localization signal. This 4 kb upstream region of the murine desmin promoter directs expression of the LacZ reporter gene throughout the heart from E7.5 and in skeletal muscle and vascular smooth muscle cells from E9.5.
