This Y Chromosome (Chr) duplication resulted from asymmetric recombination during male meiosis between the short arm of a Y Chr (Yp) of AKR (M. m. domesticus) origin and an X Chr carrying Tp(Y)1CtSxr-a, which originally occurred in the RIII (M. m. musculus) inbred strain. Southern blot analysis using probes for Yp sequences showed that the recombinant Yp carries both M. m. musculus and M. m. domesticus alleles of Sry, Zfy2 and Kdm5d (formerly Smcy); only the M. m. musculus variant at Zfy1; and only the M. m. domesticus variants of the centromere-proximal Rbmy (formerly Rbm) repeat sequences, demonstrating the presence of a tandem duplication that includes Sry, Zfy2 and Kdm5d.
