This transgene consists of the human IL6 cDNA under the control of the mouse metallothionein-1 promoter. A 1.7-kb DNA fragment corresponding to the 3' portion of human beta-globin gene is also inserted downstream of the IL6 cDNA to stabilize the IL6 mRNA. Human IL6 mRNA is only detected in the liver.
