The transgene contains nucleotides -2126 through +65 (the end of exon 1) of the mouse transgelin/SM 22 promoter region driving expression of E. coli beta-galactosidase with a nuclear localization signal. In transgenic embryos, beta-galactosidase expression is detected in the somites and the presumptive right ventricle and outflow tract of the heart and subsequently in the arteries, but not in the visceral muscles or veins. In adults expression is seen in arterial smooth muscle cells, but not in other smooth muscles. (J:34770)
