A 7.5 kb genomic DNA fragment whose 3' end resides 3.5 kb upstream from the mouse neurogenin 1 coding region regulates expression of enhanced green fluorescent protein (EGFP) from the beta-globin basal promoter. Developmental CNS expression of EGFP recapitulates parts of the Neurog1 expression pattern; fluorescence is detected at embryonic day (E)11.5 in areas of the midbrain, hindbrain, spinal neural tube, trigeminal ganglia and olfactory epithelium, but not in the dorsal root ganglia or forebrain and not earlier in the cranial ganglia.
