These mice were discovered in a private research colony at The Jackson laboratory. The recessive lear-2J mutation results in nearly identical phenotypes to lear with mice having small body sizes, subfertility, severe hearing loss, and small ear pinnae. Due to the similarity to the lear phenotype, an allelism test was conducted and produced affected offspring, confirming that lear-2J is a second mutation in Prkra. Routine pathology screens found no obvious lesions. (J:159349)
