In mice with this transgene, the E. coli beta-galactosidase (lacZ) coding sequence is expressed from a minimal promoter under control of a tetrameric repeat of the bone morphogenic protein (BMP) responsive enhancer (BMPRE), a 52 base pair sequence that is located between nucleotides -3523 and -3471 upstream of the mouse homeobox, msh-like 2 (Msx2) gene and comprises the "core element" required for BMP responsiveness. Beta-galactosidase activity in transgenic embryos partially recapitulates the spatiotemporal expression pattern of endogenous Msx2. (J:93586)
