The transgenic construct consists of 416 bp of the 5' flanking sequence from the murine alpha-A crystallin gene (Cryaa) fused to the coding sequence of the SV40 early region. Transgenic F0 animals generally died prematurely by 4 months of age so only one line, 7488, bearing 2 copies of the transgene, was propagated. Expression is lens-specific. Transgene expression is identified by white and opaque appearance of the eyes upon opening, instead of a normal transparent lens. (J:127709)
