A cDNA encoding Cre recombinase with an N-terminal nuclear localization signal (nls) resides immediately 5' of the translation initiation site of the endogenous gene. This allele was derived from Emx1tm1(cre)Ito by FLP recombinase excision of a FRT-flanked pgk-neo cassette that lay immediately downstream of the nls-cre gene. The Emx1 promoter drives Cre recombinase expression in the embryonic through adult dorsal telencephelon; deletion of the selection cassette reportedly prevents ectopic expression in other brain regions.
