The transgene expresses TVA, the receptor for avian retrovirus ALV, subgroup A (ALV-A), from a quail cDNA under direction of a 2.2-kb promoter-containing fragment from the human glial fibrillary acidic protein, which confers specificity for terminally or near-terminally differentiated astrocytes. The construct also contains an intron and polyadenylation signal from the mouse protamine gene. Cells presenting this receptor can be infected by replication-competent ALV splice acceptor (RCAS) vectors, permitting cell type specific expression of vector-borne genes. (J:52161, J:69971)
