A bacterial lacZ gene was inserted into the gene such that the endogenous gene promoter drives expression of beta-galactosidase. RT-PCR analysis detects a high level of gene transcript in the brain, cortex, subcortical region, cerebellum, olfactory bulb, pancreas and pituitary gland and lower levels in brainstem, spinal cord, eye, Harderian glands, lung, kidney, spleen, lymph nodes, skin, urinary bladder, adrenal gland, salivary gland, tongue, stomach, small intestine, testis, epididymis, seminal vesicle, coagulating gland, prostate gland, ovaries, uterus and white fat. Beta-galactosidase expression from this allele is detectable in brain, spinal cord, pancreas, pituitary gland and salivary glands.
