A bacterial lacZ gene was inserted into the gene such that the endogenous gene promoter drives expression of beta-galactosidase. RT-PCR analysis detects a high level of gene transcript in the gallbladder, moderate levels in lung, skin, seminal vesicle, prostate gland, ovary and uterus and low levels in subcortical region, olfactory bulb, eye, Harderian glands, liver, pancreas, kidney, thymus, urinary bladder, pituitary gland, salivary gland, tongue, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, cecum, testis, epididymis, coagulating gland and white fat. Beta-galactosidase expression from this allele is detectable in brain, spinal cord, thymus, lung, liver, pancreas, kidney, trachea, skeletal muscle, skin, testis, uterus and cervix. Most striking expression was detected in bronchial and tracheal epithelium. Staining was observed in different tissue and cell types, including epithelium and neurons.
