A bacterial lacZ gene was inserted into the gene such that the endogenous gene promoter drives expression of beta-galactosidase. While RT-PCR analysis detects high levels of RNA transcripts in the pancreas and lower levels in many of the other tissues examined, beta-galactosidase expression from this allele is detectable in most tissues examined except for thymus, spleen, lymph nodes, bone marrow and ovary.
