A bacterial lacZ gene was inserted into the gene such that the endogenous gene promoter drives expression of beta-galactosidase. RT-PCR analysis detects a gene transcript in brain, spinal cord and pituitary gland and at lower levels in cerebellum, brainstem, eye, Harderian glands, heart, lung, pancreas, kidney, spleen, lymph nodes, gallbladder, urinary bladder, adrenal gland, tongue, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, testis, epididymis, seminal vesicle, prostate gland, ovary, uterus and white fat; beta-galactosidase expression is detectable in brain, spinal cord, eyes, aorta, heart, lung, urinary bladder, thyroid gland, parathyroid gland, trachea, pituitary gland, adrenal glands, skin, prostate gland, ovary and uterus.
