The mouse prion protein promoter was used to drive expression of human microtubule-associated protein tau with a P301L substitution. Hemizygous mice mice expressed the protein at levels roughly equivalent to that of endogenous tau. A largely neuronal expression pattern was shown by in situ hybridization, with strongest signals in the cerebellum and hippocampus, followed by the thalamus, hypothalamus, spinal cord, brainstem and cortex.
