A beta-geo cassette was inserted into exon 5. Northern blot of embryos with the paternally inherited allele failed to detect wild-type transcript, however, appropriate beta-gal expression was demonstrated in the brain, pituitary and adrenal medulla of adults. Extended exposure of blots revealed a weak signal corresponding to an aberrant alternatively spliced transcript involving exon 4, 49 nucleotides from beta-geo and exon 6. Mutants with the maternally inherited allele failed to detect beta-gal activity as expected. (J:54324)
