The lacZ gene was inserted by homologous recombination in place of the first coding exon and proximal portion of the following intron, yielding a fusion protein encoded by the first 7 base pairs of endogenous sequence followed by lacZ. The endogenous protein is not detected by immunohistochemistry, but beta galactosidase activity is observed. (J:99733)
