A targeting vector replaced exon 1 and the proximal part of the first intron with a promoter-less IRES-lacZgt1.2neo cassette. The deletion included 91 bp upstream of the transcriptional start site, resulting in a null allele. Protein expression was reduced in heterozygous and undetectable in homozygous mutant embryos.
