LacZ and PGK-neo replaced exon 3 (the first coding exon) and were inserted in frame with the first ATG via homologous recombination. Northern analysis and RT-PCR confirmed the absence of mRNA in MEFs and trigeminal ganglia, respectively. Beta-galactosidase was expressed in developing trigeminal ganglion and dorsal root ganglion.
