Transgenic mice overexpress the simian plasma cholesteryl ester transfer protein under control of the mouse metallothionein (MT1) promoter. Four lines were characterized with mice exhibiting a negative correlation between plasma CETP activity and total plasma cholesterol, plasma apolipoprotein A-I levels (APOA1), and plasma APOAI to APOB ratio. This line, UCTP-20, was the highest expressor of the transgene and was selected for further study. Significant transgene expression was detected by Northern blotting in the liver, brain and heart.
