The first coding exon, exon S, was replaced with a neo cassette by homologous recombination. Exon S, which encodes 31 codons for the signal peptide and the start codon, is common to both kinase and nonkinase isoforms. While Northern blot of homozygous mutants showed a small amount of aberrant transcript, Western blotting demonstrated that no receptors were detected in the homozygous mutant mice brains. (J:88782)
