Exons 11, 12, and 13 were replaced with a neomycin selection cassette inserted by homologous recombination. Normal protein was undetected by immunostaining of the basal forebrain of homozygous mutant embryos. Assays of the brain stem, spinal cord, and septum showed an absence of endogenous activity.
