A 2.1 kb fragment encompassing exon 3 and portions of the surrounding introns was replaced by a neo cassette inserted by homologous recombination. Neither transcript nor protein was detected by Northern or Western blot analyses of liver, kidney, testis, and lung tissue obtained from homozygous mutant mice. Assays of benzo(alpha)pyrene-sensitive Nqo2 activity showed levels to be almost completely abrogated in kidney, testes, and lung samples and reduced by approximately 80% in liver samples. The authors report that the residual activity in the liver is believed to be the result of related proteins. (J:80549)
