Exon 5, which encodes amino acids 94 through 167, was replaced by the insertion of a neomycin selection cassette. The deleted region encompassed portions of repeats 2 and 3 that are involved in DNA binding. Whereas this allele was observed to be homozygously lethal, similar amounts of protein were detected by Western blot analysis of wild-type and heterozygous mice. (J:57999)
