The gene was disrupted by insertion of a neomycin resistance cassette into a coding exon via homologous recombination. Gene expression is absent in the ventral tegmental area (VTA) and dopaminergic cells of the substantia nigra pars compacta (SNC) in homozygous animals as shown by in situ hybridization analysis.
