Exon 2, encoding the translational start site and the first transmembrane domain, was replaced with a cassette containing lacZ and neo genes. An RNAse protection assay showed an absence of transcript in homozygous mutant mice. The expression pattern of beta-galactosidase recapitulated that of the endogenous gene. (J:65415)
