An IRES-lacZ and neomycin selection cassette was inserted into exon 5, which encodes the sialyl S motif, an essential part of the catalytic domain of the encoded protein. TLC analysis on brain extract of homozygous mice demonstrated that no active protein was produced from this allele. (J:67955)
