A tau-lacZ reporter gene cassette was inserted into the first exon, replacing sequences encoding the endogenous methionine initiation codon and the first 72 amino acids. Heterozygous mice expressed tau-beta-galactosidase that was indistinguishable from the endogenous expression pattern of En1. (J:52637)
