A lacZ gene followed by a neomycin selection cassette replaced a 263 bp DNA fragment containing the endogenous translation start site. A beta-galactosidase protein is expressed from this allele under the control of the endogenous promoter, but the expression pattern does not faithfully reflect the expression pattern of the endogenous gene.
