A lacZ-neo cassette including termination signals replaced exon 1. The targeted allele encodes a fusion protein that lacks the DNA-binding and homeodomains functionally essential to the endogenous protein. Northern blot analysis showed an absence of normal transcript in homozygous mutant embryos. The expression pattern of beta-galactosidase largely resembled that of the endogenous gene, with the noted exception of expression in the notochord. (J:45575)
