Enables protein tyrosine kinase activity. Involved in several processes, including gamete generation; positive regulation of gastro-intestinal system smooth muscle contraction; and protein phosphorylation. Located in acrosomal vesicle; cytoplasmic side of plasma membrane; and external side of plasma membrane. Used to study aplastic anemia and male infertility. Biomarker of acute pancreatitis and gastroschisis. Human ortholog(s) of this gene implicated in several diseases, including acute myeloid leukemia; gastrointestinal stromal tumor; germ cell cancer (multiple); piebaldism; and renal cell carcinoma. Orthologous to human KIT (KIT proto-oncogene, receptor tyrosine kinase). [provided by Alliance of Genome Resources, Apr 2022]
