Enables cysteine-type peptidase activity. Involved in several processes, including aging; leukocyte apoptotic process; and striated muscle cell differentiation. Located in cytosol and intracellular membrane-bounded organelle. Biomarker of several diseases, including endometritis; sciatic neuropathy; transient cerebral ischemia; type 2 diabetes mellitus; and ureteral obstruction. Human ortholog(s) of this gene implicated in Alzheimer's disease; breast cancer; colon cancer; and lung non-small cell carcinoma. Orthologous to human CASP7 (caspase 7).
