Involved in several processes, including cellular response to cholesterol; lipid transport; and lipoprotein biosynthetic process. Located in basolateral plasma membrane and cell surface. Biomarker of several diseases, including extrahepatic cholestasis; fatty liver disease; membranous glomerulonephritis; obesity; and premature menopause. Human ortholog(s) of this gene implicated in Alzheimer's disease; coronary artery disease; hypolipoproteinemia (multiple); obesity; and type 2 diabetes mellitus.
