Enables mRNA binding activity. A structural constituent of ribosome. Involved in several processes, including cellular response to ethanol; negative regulation of bicellular tight junction assembly; and ribosomal small subunit assembly. Part of cytosolic small ribosomal subunit. Used to study transient cerebral ischemia. Biomarker of vascular dementia. Orthologous to human RPS6 (ribosomal protein S6).
