Involved in chloride transport and glycinergic synaptic transmission. Located in endoplasmic reticulum and external side of plasma membrane. Is active in calyx of Held and glycinergic synapse. Is integral component of postsynaptic specialization membrane and integral component of presynaptic membrane. Human ortholog(s) of this gene implicated in hyperekplexia 1.
