Enables porphobilinogen synthase activity and proteasome core complex binding activity. Involved in several processes, including cellular response to lead ion; response to herbicide; and response to vitamin. Located in cytosol and extracellular space. Used to study anemia and hemochromatosis. Biomarker of acute kidney failure; hypothyroidism; liver cirrhosis; status epilepticus; and visual epilepsy. Human ortholog(s) of this gene implicated in porphyria cutanea tarda and sickle cell anemia. Orthologous to human ALAD (aminolevulinate dehydratase).
