Enables voltage-gated sodium channel activity. Involved in regulation of sensory perception of pain. Acts upstream of or within sodium ion transport. Located in C-fiber and plasma membrane. Is expressed in several structures, including alimentary system; central nervous system; immune system; liver and biliary system; and reproductive system. Used to study familial episodic pain syndrome 3 and hereditary sensory neuropathy. Human ortholog(s) of this gene implicated in familial episodic pain syndrome 3 and hereditary sensory and autonomic neuropathy type 7. Orthologous to human SCN11A (sodium voltage-gated channel alpha subunit 11). [provided by Alliance of Genome Resources, Apr 2022]
