Enables SNARE binding activity and calcium channel inhibitor activity. Involved in several processes, including modulation of chemical synaptic transmission; regulation of synaptic vesicle priming; and signal release. Acts upstream of or within calcium-ion regulated exocytosis. Located in several cellular components, including axon; nuclear membrane; and secretory vesicle. Is integral component of plasma membrane. Part of synaptobrevin 2-SNAP-25-syntaxin-1a complex. Is expressed in several structures, including adrenal gland; aorta; intercostal muscle; nervous system; and retina. Used to study disease of mental health. Human ortholog(s) of this gene implicated in Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease and Hirschsprung's disease. Orthologous to human STX1A (syntaxin 1A).
